Arguments we may encounter:
• Tongues have ceased
o 1 Corinthians 13:8 [NKJV] Love never fails. But whether [there are] prophecies, they will fail; whether [there are] tongues, they will cease; whether [there is] knowledge, it will vanish away.
Do people still prophesy?
• Many denominational theologians believe "preaching" is "prophesying"
• YES – people still prophesy – where that be viewed a “preaching” or the more spiritual, Pentecostal perspective of “telling forth” by the Holy Spirit of God
Has knowledge vanished away?
• NO! Absolutely NOT
Have tongues ceased? – CLEARLY, NO
Then… rightly divide the Word
• That's not my gift
o As is evidenced in the previous passages discussed - in three (four) instances in the book of Acts, ALL received
• Initial Evidence - it's everyone's gift
• Witness to unbelievers
Acts 2:5-13 [NKJV] 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 "And how [is it that] we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 "Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 "Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 "Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God." 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?" 13 Others mocking said, "They are full of new wine."
1 Corinthians 14:21-22 [NKJV] 21 In the law it is written: "With [men of] other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me," says the Lord. 22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.
• As a Prayer Language
• 1 Corinthians 14:2,4 [NKJV] 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands [him]; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. ... 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
A great tool for praying about things beyond our understanding
Don’t know what to do? It’s a mystery. Pray in other tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:14 - [NKJV] For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
• It’s okay to have “unfruitful” understanding
• Its perfect prayer directed by the Holy Spirit Himself
• We don’t have to “understand” everything to trust the Holy Spirit to work
• It is something we do by faith – which always pleases the Lord
• Equal to Prophecy - "Thus saith the Lord"
• 1 Corinthians 12:10 - as previously stated in the list of 9 gifts
• Prophecy is not necessarily just about telling the future (which many theologians class as “word of wisdom”).
• Prophecy is speaking words of edification and exhortation to strengthen the Body of Christ.
• 1 Corinthians 14:5 [NKJV] I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies [is] greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.
• Tongue & interpretation working together are the equivalent to prophecy.
• All at considered “utterance” gifts of the Spirit
• Many diversities and operations of these gifts
• No interpretation
o 1 Corinthians 14:27-28 [KJV] 27 If any man speak in an [unknown] tongue, [let it be] by two, or at the most [by] three, and [that] by course; and let one interpret. 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
o Diversities of Tongues; diversities of interpretation
1 Corinthians 14:13 - [NKJV]Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
o Make/take time to interpret
Word for word translation = prophecy "Thus saith the Lord"
But interpretation can also be defined as
• An idea
• An impression
o Interpreter
1 Corinthians 14:26-28 [NKJV] 26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, [let there be] two or at the most three, [each] in turn, and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.
Brings order to chaos
1 Corinthians 14:37-40 [NKJV] 37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. 39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
